Don’t Starve

In a recent playthrough, I got bored and set an entire forest on fire.

In a recent playthrough, I got bored and set an entire forest on fire.

In yesterday’s Sibset post I made a brief mention of the game Don’t Starve, and it occurred to me not long after hitting publish that the names of the playable characters were worth a mention. I picked up a copy of Don’t Starve during it’s beta release on Steam (i.e. before it’s official release), and have been a big fan of the game ever since.

At it’s heart, it’s a survival game. You’re effectively plopped down in a world by the antagonist Maxwell and the aim is to survive for as long as possible. The three things you need to keep up is your characters health, hunger and sanity. Whilst you’re busy trying to collect fire wood, there are also many enemies out there attempting to kill you.

As for the playable characters, they all possess a W- name. You start out with Wilson and gradually unlock other characters as the game progresses.

Wilson

A gentleman scientist and the first playable character. His special ability is that of growing a magnificent beard. No, really. The name Wilson means son of William and ranked at #692 in 2013.

Willow

The second playable character, who you can see me playing as above. Willow’s special ability is that of spontaneously (or purposefully) creating fire. Willow is a tree name, the name coming from Old English and means to twist, which itself came from Latin, meaning vine. She ranked at #54 in 2013.

Wendy

The Wendy character is haunted by her dead sister Abigail, whom Wendy can summon as almost a sidekick when fighting mobs. I knew that I’d covered this name before, and was somewhat alarmed to discover that my 3 Long Forms of Wendy post is now 3 years old. Huh. Time flies.

The origins of the name Wendy are often given as being  penned by J.M.Barrie when he first wrote Peter Pan. It also has roots as a nickname of the Welsh name Gwendolen, which means fair, blessed or white, but it was when Barrie used the name that it really entered the public conscious. She ranked at #1774 in 2013.

Wolfgang

The strongest character in the game, Wolfgang bears a Germanic name, meaning path of the wolf. Only 3 babies were given the name in 2013.

Wes

This character is effectively the hard setting for the game, with health, sanity and hunger all decaying much faster for him. The name Wes is the short form of Wesley, a name which means west meadow in Old English. Wes doesn’t rank, but Wesley does – at #655.

Wigfrid

This character is an actress dressed up as a viking. She’s a tough cookie, and is spawned in the game with armour. Her name derives from Old High German, and means peaceful warrior. Predictably, the name doesn’t rank.

Woodie

This character beings the game with Lucy the Axe in his inventory, and is a Canadian lumberjack. Woodie is either a nickname for Woodrow, or simply derived from the word wood. The name Woodie does not rank, but Woody does (no doubt with a little help from Toy Story) – at #464.

Webber

This character is a boy who was at some point eaten by a spider, but lives on. His name is therefore a reference to this somewhat bizarre relationship. The name Webber is a surname, and does not rank.

Waverly

This witch character, like all those below, can only be modded in game. Her name is of Old English origin, meaning quaking aspen. I was rather surprised to discover that the name does not rank in England&Wales.

Winnie

This name comes as a nickname of Winifred, and is notably the name of beloved bear-character Winnie the Pooh. She ranked at #925 in 2013.

Wallace

This name started out as a Scottish and English surname, coming from Norman French origins and meaning Welsh/foreigner. The most famed bearer of the name is Sir William Wallace, a Scottish hero whom lead a rebellion against the English in the 13th century. Unsurprising, the name was only given to 4 boys born in England&Wales in 2013.

Wilton

This name was also originally a surname of Old English origins, meaning town on the River Wylye. The name doesn’t rank.

Wilbur

Our last character bears another surname turned first name. This one is also of English origins, and comes from the Middle English nickname Wildbor, meaning wild boar; he ranked at #730.

The Top 100 Analysis

The Rising Names

New Entrants to the Top 10

There was only one new entrant to the Top 10 for the girls  this year, with Poppy racing up 6 places to #7, replacing the once-darling of the flower world: Lily, who falls to #12.

As for the boys, Oscar races into the Top 10 to sit at #7, whilst George sneaks back in at #10. They replace Alfie and Riley.

New Entrants to the Top 100

On the boys side there was the most amount of movement into and out of the Top 100. In all, 6 names are new on the boys side:

  • Teddy (now #86, up from #141, that’s a massive leap of 55 places)
  • Ibrahim (now #89, up from #107)
  • Ronnie (now #90, up from #105)
  • Felix (now #91, up from #114)
  • Austin (now #94, up from 108)
  • Albert (now #99, up from #109, which has made me very happy)

As for the girls, there were only 3 new entrants:

  • Victoria (now #88, up from #106)
  • Darcy (now #93, up from #107)
  • Beatrice (now #95, up from #114)

Big Jumps in the Top 100

With Teddy doing so well this year, it may not surprise you to hear that Theodore also made big leaps within the Top 100 after his first entrance last year at #97, jumping up about 20 places to #78. Other big rises for the boys are: Hugo; Reuben; Elijah; Oscar; and Blake, who all rose at least 10 places.

As for the girls, the highest rising name within the Top 100 was Elsie (for the second year rising) who rose about 20 places, also, to break the 50 mark at #47. Elsie first joined the Top 100 in 2011. Nature names fared well in the Top 100, with Willow (15 places), Violet, and Ivy (both 22 places, respectively) also being high risers.

The Falling Names

Exiters of the Top 100

And the names they’ve replaced are:

  • Rhys (#101)
  • Ellis (#103)
  • Kayden (#104)
  • Bailey (#113)
  • Taylor (#118)
  • Kyle (#120)

For the girls, this year Sara and Lydia shared the Top 100 spot, thus only two names fell out:

  • Caitlin (#114)
  • Keira (#110)

Big Falls in the Top 100

It may not surprise the British public to hear Cameron was one of the biggest fallers in 2013, falling 16 places to #93; at this rate, he may drop out altogether for the 2014 list. Other names falling far within the Top 100 are Callum, Liam, Tyler and Riley, all falling at least 10 places each.

For the girls, the big fallers were: Hollie (down 21 places to #75); Paige (down 18 places to #98); Madison (down 17 places to #92); and Amy (down 14 places to #76).

Sibset of the Week: The Robertsons

Davina McCall, from the telegraph.co.uk

When I wrote about Dave last week, I had to bite my tongue from elaborating too much about Davina McCall, because whilst writing that particular blog I remembered the names of her three children.

As you may now be aware, Davina McCall is a relatively well-known TV presenter here in the UK, having previously been the voice of Big Brother until it was axed from Channel 4.

With her husband Matthew Robertson, Davina has three children, born between 2001 and 2006:

Holly Willow

Tilly Pippy

Chester Micky

Whilst I’m no real fan of the name Tilly, there’s something about Tilly Pippy that always seems to cause a smile from me. I do believe that Davina has a family relation with the name or nickname Pippy, which is where that particular name came from.

Finally, a comment by ONS on the data:

There are a number of possible reasons why the popularity of baby names can change over time.
The popularity of names can be influenced by names of famous figures or current celebrities and
what they name their own babies. However, it is an individual choice which can be influenced by a
number of other factors such as the religious, cultural and/or ethnic identities of the parents or the
names of family, friends or fictional characters. As such, there is a great diversity of baby names. In
2011, there were 723,913 live births in England and Wales (ONS, 2012), with over 28,000 different
boys’ names and just over 35,000 different girls’ names registered. The top ten names only account
for 14 per cent of all names in 2011.

Oh, here is the new Top 100, including the change in rank since 2010:

Sibset of the Week: The Fiennes

I could only cover one family this week – I almost posted this on Friday after finding out about some of the names but held back a few days, I even resisted the temptation to post some of the names on Twitter.

Mark Fiennes was an English photographer and illustrator. He is a cousin of the noted explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He met and married a lady named Jennifer Lash in the 1960s. As an aside, his wife was more often known as Jini, and was a noted artist and novelist. Sadly, these days neither are still with us, but together they welcomed no less than seven children:

Martha Maria

Ralph Nathaniel

Joseph Alberic (twin of Jacob)

Jacob Mark (twin of Joseph)

Sophie Victoria

Magnus Hubert

We could stop here, but if you dig a little deeper, there are plenty more wonderful names to discover. Let’s start with Jacob, who is married to a lady named Melanie. Together they have two children, born in the early 2000s:

Teale Isabella

Nathaniel

Whilst both Isabella and Nathaniel are relatively heard of, the choice of Teale as the name for their eldest child is certainly unexpected. Nathaniel could simply be a family name, given that young Nathaniel shares his name with Uncle Ralph, for whom the name is a middle name and with one of his cousins whom I shall mention shortly.

I also wanted to mention the children of Magnus, with his wife Maya, born in the late 1990s:

Cheyenne Allegra

Shanti Atalanta

The name Shanti was recently championed over at Name Fancy, and I certainly was surprised to see it used on a child so soon after reading the post. But alas, it is the last sibset which really inspired this post. It was inspired by a rather humourous email from a friend asking whether I was aware the the actor who played a young Lord Voldemort was called Hero. How ironic, I remember thinking.

Martha is married to George Tiffin, and together they have three children:

Titan Nathaniel

Hero Beauregard (m)

Mercy Jini Willow

Some scoff at using Hero as a girls name, despite the historical usage, so I kindly present them with a male Hero, born in the late 1990s. It’s worth noting that Hero’s uncle, Ralph Fiennes, plays Voldemort in the films.

Low down on low

Gary Barlow, from onepakistan.com

As a word, low is rather negative; I wrote an essay today linking low self-esteem with high conformity rates. However, I am starting to explore names ending with -low, and there are plenty of interesting names to consider.

First off is Willow, probably the most popular name in this class; in 2010, she jointly ranked at #112 with Eve. The name Willow derives from the Old English word welig. Willow is also a nature name, the name of a tree which belongs to the Salix genus. The Wind in the Willows is a classic children’s book, written by Kenneth Grahame and first published in 1908. I’ve also seen an increased interest in the phonetically similar name Willa, which is the female form of the name William.

Another female name which has been on the receiving end of much interest recently is Harlow, following it’s use by Nicole Richie and Joel Madden for their daughter, Harlow Winter Kate in 2008. A famous namesake aside from this is the actress Jean Harlow, who was born Harlean Harlow Carpenter. For her, Harlow was her mother’s maiden name. The name Harlow derives from Old English and means either rocky hill or army hill.

There are several other -arlow names to consider:

  • Barlow. The surname of Gary Barlow, famed singer-songwriter in the UK and member of Take That. Means either barley hill or barley clearing.
  • Darlow. Means secret love, and has been covered by lovely Nook.
  • Farlow. Means fearne mound, and again, covered by lovely Nook.
  • Marlow. Heather Armstrong of Dooce has a daughter named Marlo. The name means remnants of a lake.

Speaking of bloggers, Rubyellen of Cakies welcomed a little girl she named Glow in September 2011. Another word name is Hallow, first spotted in July 2011 by Elisabeth over at You Can’t Call It ‘It’!

I personally love the name Winslow, and my local news bulletin has two regular reporters working for them with the surnames Pentelow and Shardlow. Aside from these, there are several other surname-esque -low names out there:

  • Brownlow. Means brown hill. Mr Brownlow is a character in Charles Dickens’ classic tale, Oliver Twist.
  • Henlow. Means hen hill.
  • Huntlow. Means wolf hunt.
  • Kellow. With Kelly having experienced popularity, this name certainly seems a plausible choice.
  • Parslow. Means cross the water.

Finally, we’re ending with a few more suggestions, courtesy of Marginamia’s fantastic list of O names:

  • Billow
  • Cello
  • Cielo
  • Fallow
  • Flow
  • Gallo
  • Kahlo
  • Laylo
  • Valo/ Vallo
