Spot of the Week: Inspire a Generation

All through the Olympics I’ve found myself grabbing my copy of the Official Olympic Programme, which details each and every sport in the back. It’s been an invaluable source of information, and is a treasure-trove of names. The tagline for London 2012 is Inspire A Generation, and on each page dedicated to each sport is a mini-feature of a so-called star of tomorrow of Team GB.

Some of their names are downright interesting, and it’s an insight into the types of names in the Team GB of tomorrow:

Anastasija, 18 (Synchronised Swimming)

Dominick, 17 (Gymnastics)

Fiona, 25 (Water Polo)

Gemma, 19 (Beach Volleyball)

Jermaine, 17 (Volleyball)

Kenta, 20 (Mountain Bike)

Leonora, 25 (Rowing)

Matthias, 18 (Football)

Mervyn, 27 (Javelin)

Ranvir, 17 (Wrestling)

Sonny, 18 (Weightlifting)

Remember how the Olympic cauldron was lit by 7 unknown athletes-of-tomorrow, picked by the greats of British sport? Their first names were Adelle, Desiree, Callum, Jordan (m), Katie, Aidan & Cameron.

To end, I hear often about how Jemima is unusable in the North America region because of a brand of syrup, thus I present to you the British version:

Lyles

For those wondering about what type of cuisine Rosa’s served (featured in last week’s post), it’s Thai.

Foodie Friday – Potatoes

from blogger.com

I’ve been a little obsessed with mashed potatoes of late, sad as it may sound. I’m not sure exactly why I’ve wanted to include them in every meal I’ve cooked this week, but it gives me a neat little excuse to talk about the names of varieties of potatoes. A true potato enthusiastic (too much?) will know that some varieties of potatoes lend themselves well to roasting, some to boiling and others to mashing.

That is, in effect, my strenuous introduction to my post on names of potato varieties. Quite a few of the names on this list will be familiar to you, whilst others are a bit more out there. Either way, it’s a fun little list of names to kick off the weekend.
